About the SR20DET Redtop
The Redtop gets its name from the red valve cover, and it’s the original turbocharged variant in Nissan’s SR family. It came factory-fitted in the S13 Silvia and 180SX in Japan during the late ’80s and early ’90s, and it’s been one of the most popular 2.0L turbo swaps ever since — for good reason.
The block is cast iron. The head is aluminum. The factory T25 turbo spools fast, and the whole setup hits around 205 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque in stock form. It’s a balanced, well-sorted engine that responds well to modifications without needing a rebuild first.
What’s included in this package:
- JDM SR20DET Redtop 2.0L Turbo Engine
- 5-Speed RWD Manual Transmission
- Engine Wiring Harness

How We Handle These Engines
Every engine that comes through us gets compression tested before it ships. We’re not guessing at condition and neither should you — you’ll have actual numbers before the engine leaves our hands.
We source directly from Japanese auctions and dismantlers. No mystery rebuilds, no remanufactured cores passed off as JDM. What you’re getting is a genuine S13 Redtop, imported as-pulled.
Shipping goes out across the continental U.S. through carriers that regularly handle engine freight, so it’s not being tossed on a random pallet.
Where Does This Engine Fit?
The SR20DET was built for RWD platforms and swaps cleanly into several chassis with the right preparation:
- Nissan 240SX (S13 and S14)
- Datsun 510
- Datsun 240Z / 280Z (custom mounts required)
- Mazda RX-7 FC and FD
- Toyota AE86 (with modifications)
Because wiring and ECU are included, you’re not starting from scratch on the electronics side, which cuts a significant amount of time off the swap.
What the SR20DET Can Do with Modifications
Stock, you’re at roughly 205 horsepower. That’s a solid starting point, but the platform has headroom. Builders regularly push 300 to 400-plus horsepower on the stock bottom end with the right supporting work:
- Turbo upgrade (GT28, GT30, and similar)
- Front-mount intercooler
- Standalone ECU or Nistune tune
- Upgraded injectors and fuel pump
- Clutch and flywheel
It works for drift builds that need fast spool, and it works for street cars that need to stay livable. It’s flexible in a way that not every 2.0L turbo is.
Keeping It Running Long-Term
The SR20 holds up well when it’s maintained properly. A few things worth staying on top of:
- Synthetic oil, changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles
- Timing chain guides — if you hear a rattle on cold start, don’t ignore it
- Cooling system condition before and after the swap
- An oil catch can helps manage blow-by on boosted setups
- Premium fuel and proper tune if you’re modifying the fueling
Engines maintained this way routinely last well past 200,000 miles even under hard use.
